| Instructor Bio: | This workshop is led by Samantha Russell and Joel Henigson, veterans of the extreme metal realms with decades of experience in the scene. As members of Portland’s own Thirsting Altar, Samantha and Joel bring unholy expertise and a fervor for teaching. Thirsting Altar recently unleashed their EP "Reclamation" and are in the midst of recording a full-length album, offering students firsthand insights into the arcane arts of songwriting and recording. Samantha's metal expertise is extensive, having studied with renowned guitarists like Keith Merrow (Nightmarer & Conquering Dystopia) and performing in metal and rock bands since her teens. Her education includes classical guitar at the University of Arizona and Jazz Performance at Portland State University, giving her a diverse musical background. Samantha is a co-founder of Rose City Guitar Company and has been teaching for over a decade. She is a member of extreme metal bands Thirsting Altar and Nocteris. Previously, Samantha was a primary songwriter in her band Vela Pulsar and has contributed as a session musician to other projects named Tanagra and Swarm of Serpents. Her work showcases her versatility in guitar, bass, orchestration, and vocals. Joel has a wealth of information and mastery in the metal scene. He's a songwriter and musician in several bands in the Portland area, being Thirsting Altar's songwriter. Joel graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Bachelors in Songwriting and studied with Phil Tougas, founder of First Fragment. Joel operates his own music teaching studio in Portland teaching guitar, piano, production, and songwriting with specialties in rock/alternative/metal guitar and songwriting. He has taught in Portland over the last five years privately and with Happy Valley Arts Academy, School of Rock, and Youth Music Project. Joel is a skilled guitarist, vocalist, and producer and you hear this come through in the latest Thirsting Altar EP! |
