Indie Alt Rock

Indie Alt Rock (Monthly Ongoing Class)

From jangly indie anthems and garage rock to post-punk grooves and alternative rock, Indie Alt Rock is an ongoing class for upper beginner to intermediate guitarists who want to explore the sounds, techniques, songwriting approaches, and musical vocabulary behind some of the most creative and influential alternative music.

This isn't a class where we simply learn a song and move on. Each month, we'll study a new song, artist, or musical concept as a starting point for a deeper exploration of how indie and alternative music is constructed. We'll break down the guitar parts, bass lines, rhythms, melodies, harmony, and arrangement to understand how all of the pieces fit together.

Rather than simply memorizing parts, you'll learn how to listen to the entire arrangement and understand your role within it—whether you're playing rhythm guitar, lead guitar, or bass.

What to Expect

The featured music and learning objectives rotate each month, allowing you to continually build your skills while exploring different eras and approaches to indie, alternative, garage rock, post-punk, and beyond.

Depending on the material we're studying, class may explore:

  • Moveable power chords and barre chords

  • Simpler alternate picking patterns

  • Eighth-note and sixteenth-note rhythm patterns

  • Developing rhythmic consistency and groove

  • One-octave scale patterns

  • Pentatonic and introductory melodic vocabulary

  • Building guitar parts around chord progressions

  • Creating and playing complementary rhythm and lead parts

  • Understanding how bass and guitar interact

  • Layering rhythm guitar, lead guitar, and bass guitar

  • Understanding how different parts occupy space within an arrangement

  • Basic lead guitar and melodic phrasing

  • Riff construction and repetition

  • Exploring dynamics, articulation, and tone

  • Understanding the theory behind the music you're playing

  • Analyzing how seemingly simple guitar parts create compelling songs

A major focus of the class is learning to think like an arranger, not just a guitar player. You'll learn how individual parts work together to create the overall sound of a band and how changing one part can completely change the feel of a song.

Learn How the Whole Band Fits Together

One of the defining characteristics of great indie and alternative music is that the individual parts don't have to be complicated to be effective.

A simple guitar riff can become powerful when it's paired with the right bass line. A repetitive chord progression can become interesting through melodic layering. A rhythm guitar part can leave space for a lead line to shine.

We'll explore these relationships directly in class.

You'll have opportunities to look at songs from the perspective of rhythm guitar, lead guitar, and bass, helping you understand how each instrument contributes to the arrangement and how musicians create space for one another.

This approach helps you become a more versatile musician, whether your goal is to play guitar in a band, write your own songs, improvise, or simply better understand the music you love.

Explore the Artists Who Shaped Indie & Alternative Rock

Throughout the course, we'll study music from a wide range of artists and bands, including:

Ween, The Smiths, The Kooks, Talking Heads, The Breeders, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Radiohead, Pixies, The White Stripes, Weezer, Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, Death Cab for Cutie, The Cranberries, Elliott Smith, The Strokes, R.E.M., Foo Fighters, Muse, Built to Spill, Cage the Elephant, Cherry Glazerr, New Order, Metric, The Cure, Parquet Courts, and many more.

This range allows us to explore everything from jangly guitar textures and garage rock riffs to post-punk grooves, alternative songwriting, melodic lead playing, and more experimental approaches to arrangement.

Learn the Language, Not Just the Songs

Each featured song gives us an opportunity to examine why the music works.

We'll break down questions like:

  • Why does this guitar part sound so effective?

  • How do the guitar and bass interact?

  • What makes the rhythm feel driving or laid-back?

  • How does a simple scale become a memorable melody?

  • Why does the arrangement need both rhythm and lead guitar?

  • How does repetition create momentum?

  • What happens when we change the dynamics, articulation, or rhythm?

  • How can we take these ideas and apply them to our own playing?

By understanding the theory and technique behind the music, you'll develop skills that transfer to other songs rather than simply memorizing individual parts.

A New Musical Deep Dive Every Month

Indie Alt Rock is designed as a monthly, ongoing class, with new songs, artists, techniques, and learning objectives introduced throughout the year.

Each month's material is layered to meet students where they are while providing opportunities to grow. As you continue through the class, you'll encounter increasingly challenging applications of rhythm, melody, harmony, and arrangement.

Is This Class Right for You?

Indie Alt Rock is intended for upper beginner to intermediate guitarists who have a foundation in guitar and want to start exploring more stylistically specific material.

This is not intended for complete beginners. Students who are brand new to guitar should first complete our Guitar Fundamentals program, also available through Rose City Guitar Company, to make sure they have the foundational skills needed to succeed in a genre-specific class.

If you're unsure whether you're ready for Indie Alt Rock, reach out to us for a free assessment. We'd be happy to help determine which class is the best fit for your current experience and musical goals.

A Flexible Membership-Based Program

Indie Alt Rock is one of many specialty classes included in our monthly membership program. As a member of Rose City Guitar Company, you're not limited to one class—you can build a schedule around your goals and interests.

Want to combine Indie Alt Rock with Americana, Blues, Frets & Theory, Intro to Heavy Music, or another specialty class? You can mix and match classes throughout the month to create a personalized learning path.

Memberships include 4, 6, 8, or up to 12 classes per month, with pricing based on how many classes you'd like to attend. This gives you the flexibility to explore multiple styles while learning alongside a supportive community of fellow musicians.
