Americana

Absolutely — I’d shift the focus away from the “monthly theme” as the primary selling point and instead make the ongoing structure, deep song study, technique development, and genre vocabulary the core of the description. I’d also make the prerequisite for beginners much clearer.
Americana (Monthly Ongoing Class)
From country and folk to bluegrass, roots, and acoustic guitar traditions, Americana is an ongoing class for upper beginner to intermediate guitarists who want to develop the techniques, musical vocabulary, and stylistic understanding behind this rich and diverse tradition.
This is not a class where we simply learn a song from beginning to end and move on. Each month, we choose a new song and use it as a vehicle for deeper musical study. We break down how the song was constructed, exploring the techniques, theory, harmony, rhythm, arrangement, and musical choices that make the piece work.
Our goal is to help you understand why the music sounds the way it does, not just how to play it. You'll develop practical skills that you can apply to other songs and eventually use to create your own arrangements and musical ideas.
What to Expect
The featured music and learning objectives rotate each month, allowing you to continually build on the skills you've developed while exploring different corners of the Americana tradition.
Depending on the song and focus, class may explore:
-
Flatpicking and traditional country picking
-
Travis picking and fingerstyle techniques
-
Bass-strum patterns
-
Combining walking bass, melody, and harmony
-
Fingerstyle independence and coordination
-
Chord vocabulary and traditional progressions
-
Rhythm and accompaniment techniques
-
Melody and harmony
-
Creating fuller solo guitar arrangements
-
Musical phrasing, dynamics, and articulation
-
Understanding the theory behind traditional guitar parts
-
Analyzing how guitarists create their signature sounds
-
Applying techniques and concepts to other songs and musical situations
All content is layered to meet you where you're at. As you continue through the class, you'll encounter increasingly challenging applications of the techniques and concepts we're studying, allowing you to build your skills over time rather than starting from scratch each month.
Explore the Music That Shaped Americana
Throughout the course, we'll explore music from a wide range of artists, guitarists, songwriters, and traditions, including:
Caamp, Johnny Cash, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, The Paper Kites, Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Iron & Wine, Big Bill Broonzy, Mississippi John Hurt, The Carter Family, traditional Bluegrass standards, John Fahey, Elizabeth Cotten, Alison Krauss, Chet Atkins, Joni Mitchell, Gillian Welch, and many others.
The goal isn't simply to learn songs by these artists. It's to study what makes their music work and develop the tools to incorporate those ideas into your own playing.
A New Musical Deep Dive Every Month
Americana is designed as a monthly, ongoing class, with new songs, techniques, and learning objectives introduced throughout the year.
Because each month's material builds on the fundamentals of the style while introducing new applications, you can continue taking the class month after month and keep expanding your musical vocabulary.
You don't have to already know how to play traditional Americana music. What matters is that you have enough foundational guitar skills to engage with the material and apply the concepts we're exploring.
Is This Class Right for You?
Americana is not intended for complete beginners.
Students who are brand new to guitar should first complete our Guitar Fundamentals program, which is also available through Rose City Guitar Company. This ensures you have the foundational skills needed to get the most out of our genre-specific classes.
If you're unsure whether you're ready for Americana, reach out to us for a free assessment. We'd be happy to help determine which class is the best fit for your current experience and musical goals.
